Concrete flooring is durable, easy-to-clean and maintain, can withstand pets, children, and hide dirt, and lasts for a long time. On top of that, most homes already have a perfectly good concrete slab hidden underneath other flooring. Depending on the finish of your concrete, you have a variety of customization options available to you. While some should be completed by a contractor, others are doable as a DIY project. We’ll explore some here, but be sure to check out our blog for more concrete DIYs.
- Acid Staining.
This option is perfect for floors that already have a brushed finish, done with a stiff-bristled broom. Acids are mixed with salt to create the stain. When the acid is applied to the hardened concrete slab, the acid opens the pores while the salt causes a chemical reaction, discoloring the concrete. Results will vary based on the porosity, materials used, and age of the slab, so it’s best to test on a small area first. - Polished. This method is great for those starting with a smooth-finish slab. Concrete floors can be polished to shine like a mirror with the proper grit and technique. To achieve a polished finish, the surface is ground down with progressively finer abrasive pads. Keep going finer until you achieve the finish you desire. While these can be DIY, they’re tricky without the proper experience. Even if you just want assistance with one step of your DIY, we’re here to help.
- Epoxy Painted Concrete Floors. While epoxy is typically used to fill cracks and level concrete floors, it’s also a great way to achieve the same design results as with ordinary paint. Epoxy is strong, durable, and glossy, and is typically used in commercial spaces because of it. However, it’s great for the home too.
Using these design opportunities, you’ll be able to achieve unique results that elevate your concrete slab to a high-end look. From the modern home to the classic style, there’s something for everyone with concrete. To learn more about options for your project, visit our website to get a free quote.
